Ford Theatre premiered on CBS as an hour long monthly show in 1948. By 1952, it had moved to NBC in a half hour weekly format. The original CBS run featured broadway actors, and was broadcast live in NYC. The NBC run featured Hollywood actors, and was filmed on the west coast, and not broadcast live. Performers appearing during this era included Frank Bank, Scott Brady, Claudette Colbert, Charles Coburn, Ed Hinton, Vivi Janiss, Peter Lawford, Sam Levene, Ida Lupino, Thomas Mitchell, Dennis...

Flash Gordon was a TV series for the 1954-1955 season, produced in west Berlin. The series was direct to syndication throughout many parts of the US, and specifically aired on the east coast on the DuMont Television Network. The show is now in the public domain, and about half the episodes produced are available on home video. Today, I present an episode we captured that is not available on home video This episode aired March 25, 1955. It’s the 23rd episode of the show’s run. Wikipedia has...

We've just digitized this December 1952 episode of Space Patrol, coming in very near the 2nd anniversary of the Weekly show (which started airing on New Year's eve in 1950) This is a rough capture, with little attempt to clean up or sync sound, so it might get adjusted and re-uploaded eventually.

Episodes #133 and #134 (according to the leader of the film) of the Daily broadcast of Space Patrol. These would have originally aired in September of 1950, probably. Identification isn't certain because not very many episodes of this era survive. They're wearing the original uniforms, so it's prior to June of '51. Buzz is there, so it's after May of 50. The ship is called "Terra the fourth" here, though, as opposed to Battle Cruiser 100, which either represents a difference between...

The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel is an early ITV series from the UK. It aired for 18 episodes. This is the first. It was digitized from a 16mm syndication print in my personal collection. Unlike many shows of this era, The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel was shot on 35mm film (as opposed to being a live broadcast that was kinescoped, or a 16mm production) so this 16mm print is not in any way definitive. There is a Much Higher Quality transfer in circulation that was apparently...

Unlike many shows of this era, Sword of Freedom was shot on 35mm film (as opposed to being a live broadcast that was kinescoped, or a 16mm production) so this 16mm print is not in any way definitive. Johnny Midnight is an American crime drama that aired for one season in syndication from January 3, 1960 to September 21, 1960. The series stars Edmond O'Brien as the title character. Midnight is a former Broadway actor, who's cases center around Times Square and Broadway. There's a strong Sam Spade vibe to the thing which is nice. The opening sequence is missing a section of audio due to damage to the print. Digitized from a syndication print from my personal collection.

This is the raw capture from my telecine and capture box of a negative Kinescope of Space Patrol S01E27, The Lost City of the Carnacans.  It's a negative, which means you need to invert the colors for it to be useful. The audio is also several seconds *ahead* of the video, because it's a negative, so you'll need to adjust.  The capture box captures at 16:9, even though this is a 4:3 original. You can adjust this.  Maddeningly, the capture box has a bug which causes captured audio to play...

The originals are high bitrate webms.  I will start other collections as I get to other shows in my collection.  While I don’t have the budget, the equipment, or the access to private studio vaults that it would take to produce the Definitive versions of these films and TV shows, I can at least ensure that we...

Videos from elsewhere on the archive, episodes of classic science fiction TV shows mostly, passed through Jantic's DeOldify Video colorization routine. I'm testing right now to see what kinds of videos and problems it does well with, and what kinds it doesn't. From this testing, I'll move on to video up-scaling, and then to some automated ML based de-noising. If these things work well, I'll upload each step of the process as a separate file and open things up for feedback.

Space Patrol season 2 episode 15, passed through an automatic colorization routine called DeOldify. You can learn more about deoldify on github .  You can see the original footage elsewhere on the archive .  There's still a lot of work to do. Some scenes from the colorized version look great! Some of them are flickery, messy, and ugly! There are lots of adjustments I can make on the front end to clean up the video and make it easier for deoldify to do it’s work, and there are some tweaks I...
